Featuring:

Nathan Wiese, Wiese Dairy Farm

If you want to be successful and confident in the decisions you are making in the dairy business, there is one tool I want to share with you today that will help you move forward.

I sat down with three dairy producers and asked them 8 key questions, and these are the responses they shared during the NMPF Young Cooperators panel I led at the World Dairy Expo last month.

What you’ll learn:

  • What are their core values?

  • What is their core focus?

  • What is their 10-year target?

  • What is their marketing strategy?

  • What is the 3-year vision?

  • What is their 1-year target?

  • What are the "rocks" - most important actions in next 90 days?

  • What are the issues - the things that could get in the way?

About the National Young Cooperators Program

Established in 1950, the National Young Cooperators (YC) Program has been providing training and leadership development opportunities to beginning dairy farmers for over 70 years. Managed by the National Milk Producers Federation, which represents the majority of U.S. dairy farmers and their cooperatives, the YC Program has a unique advantage in reaching its target audience through an existing network of member cooperatives and their farmer-owners. The main goal of the National YC Program is to equip dairy farmers under the age of 45 with the necessary education, tools, and resources to enhance their profitability and resilience. This is achieved through year-round in-person and virtual programming.

The specific objectives of the program are as follows:

  • Enhance the leadership skills of beginning dairy farmers to improve their management effectiveness and influence as leaders.

  • Strengthen the resilience of beginning dairy farms by positively impacting their farm and business management practices.

  • Provide support for cooperative staff who serve as points of contact for beginning dairy farmers.

Leadership development is highly encouraged and recognized both locally and nationally. Many current leaders in the dairy industry, including some members of the NMPF board, have participated in NMPF's YC Program. While several member cooperatives have their own YC programs, representatives from each cooperative have the opportunity to take part in national YC activities.
