Preparing the Next Generation: How Nate Abel Is Building Skills and Confidence at Abel Dairy

Why education, outside experience and technology matter for the future of a modern dairy

Nate Abel of Abel Dairy Farms has known from an early age that he wanted to return to the family farm. He discussed how education choices, internships and real-world experience are helping him prepare for a long-term role on the dairy while building trust and credibility with the team.

Early Exposure Confirmed His Path Back to the Farm

Nate grew up spending weekends and summers at the dairy, gradually taking on more responsibility through youth apprenticeship and seasonal work. He said those early experiences made it clear he never wanted to be far from the farm and helped him understand the day-to-day realities of dairy work at a young age.

Middle Management Was Built Before It Was Needed

After high school, Nate initially pursued a business management degree but realized the coursework was geared toward corporate careers rather than family farms. He later enrolled in the dairy business management program at Lakeshore Technical College, which combined agriculture-focused business classes with hands-on dairy training. The program allowed him to build both technical and business skills relevant to returning home.

Working Off the Farm Built Perspective and Confidence

As part of his education, Nate completed an internship at Clover Hill Dairy, where he worked full time while attending school. The experience required him to learn new systems, work with unfamiliar teams and handle responsibilities outside his comfort zone. He said the internship helped him understand different management styles and gave him practical experience he could bring back to Abel Dairy.

Technology Projects Became a Gateway to Leadership

Nate’s interest in technology led him to oversee the installation and implementation of feed management software at the dairy shortly after high school. He was responsible for installation, training and troubleshooting. The system improved accountability, accuracy and accessibility, allowing staff to access information quickly and keep feeding operations running smoothly even when issues arose.

Community Involvement and Continuous Learning Shape His Mindset

Beyond the farm, Nate is active in the local fire department and helps manage the dairy’s social media presence. He sees community engagement as essential to the farm’s future and believes education and transparency help build understanding. He also emphasized the importance of patience, leadership and a willingness to keep learning as he continues to grow into his role.

Nate Abel’s path highlights how education, outside experience and responsibility can build confidence and credibility before stepping fully into a leadership role.
